Webinar Recording- Facilitating Commercial Networks to better serve low income Kenyans https://africacapacityalliance.org/n4a/blog/2015/04/20/webinar-invitation-facilitating-commercial-networks-to-better-serve-low-income-kenyans/ https://africacapacityalliance.org/n4a/blog/2015/04/20/webinar-invitation-facilitating-commercial-networks-to-better-serve-low-income-kenyans/#comments Mon, 20 Apr 2015 06:40:46 +0000 https://africacapacityalliance.org/n4a/?p=1037 Given that retail drug outlets are often the first point of contact with the healthcare system for low-income Kenyans, private pharmacies are a critical but under-recognized component of national healthcare delivery.

To address challenges in the medicine supply chain that cause negative impact on consumers such as unlicensed, unqualified providers, proliferation of substandard medicines, and irrational prescribing practices, the Kenya Pharmaceutical Association (KPA) developed the Pharmnet retail network. KPA is a professional association of pharmaceutical technologists licensed by the Kenyan Government.

Pharmnet retail pharmacies are owned and operated by independent KPA members who purchase as a group from pre-qualified suppliers and deliver medicines under a common brand with the promise of quality assurance. To consumers, Pharmnet means “the place to buy genuine medicine at an affordable price”. Most Pharmnet member pharmacies are located in the urban neighbourhoods and rural areas where most low-income Kenyans reside. Pharmnet harnesses the power of the private sector to make better quality and affordable medicines accessible to Kenyans of all income levels. The business model leverages existing networks and features market sustainability at its core, making it a powerful market engagement to improve standards in Kenya’s pharmaceutical retail sector.
