The Africa Capacity Alliance (ACA) recently graduated its pioneer class of health care providers who manage small to medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). ACA, in collaboration with Amref Health Africa (an ACA Member Institution), implemented a Business Skills Training (BST) Course for private healthcare providers.
The six week course, adapted in part from USAID’s Strengthening Health Outcomes through the Private Sector (SHOPS), provides a solid foundation of managerial, marketing and financial concepts to managers and owners of health care enterprises in a flexible manner.
The course is offered through a blended platform comprised of in-person and web-based training. The inaugural course included a class of twenty self-paying participants. The participants were drawn from diverse backgrounds and ranged from highly specialized doctors such as orthopedic surgeons, to general practitioners, nurses, clinicians and health administrators of private facilities.
The participants graduated at a colorful ceremony held at the Amref Health International Training Center on Tuesday 15th July, 2014. The students expressed appreciation for the value this course has brought to them as individuals and to their enterprises. Dr. E. Wangai, a gynecologist and the owner of Woodlands Hospital in Meru, Kenya, which has been operational for over 30 years, said, ‘’ The course enlightened us on things we have gone through and has enabled us see where we have failed and thus make adjustments … I very much appreciate this course and it will benefit our institution.’’
ACA is currently accepting applications for the next offering of the BST course, to commence in September. For more information about the course, or to enrol, please contact Lucy Nkirote at lnkirote(@)africacapacityalliance.org
