World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) has approved to fund a 3 year Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) program in Tanzania. The Program will focus on Primary Prevention of diabetes in the Lake Zone.
Several key partners will support the implementation of the program, namely the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare through its National School Health Program and the Ministry’s NCD program, Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, Tanzania Diabetes Association, Tanzania Institute of Education and National Examination Council of Tanzania.
The project will cost over 2 million dollars, taking in consideration the in kind contribution of the implementing partners. This is going to be one of the major health initiatives that bring together the public and private sectors in responding to an emerging public health problem in Tanzania.
The beneficiaries of the project will be primary school pupils and the communities in the lake zone regions of Mainland Tanzania.
‘The project will contribute to the nation’s response to the double burden of communicable and non communicable diseases’ says Dr. Ogillo, APHFTA Chief Executive Officer. He further adds, “Healthy eating patterns in childhood and adolescence can promote optimal childhood health, growth and intellectual development; prevent immediate health problems, such as iron deficiency, obesity, eating disorders, and dental caries; and may prevent long-term health problems, such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, cancer and stroke”
APHFTA has in the past successfully implemented school and community based NCD prevention programs with the support of WDF since 2007.
